Turkey’s first climate street has been named: Kukurtlu Street will adopt to climate change!
Environmental transformation in Kukurtlu
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality is the first municipality that is implementing the Climate Street Project whose examples can be found in the Netherlands, Germany, Finland and Denmark. The Project started with close collaboration of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality and Novusens Smart City Institute supported by the Provincial Directorate of Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Bursa Technical University, Uludag University, Bursa City Council, BEBKA-Bursa Eskisehir Bilecik Development Agency, Chamber of Environmental Engineers, Chamber of Landscape Architects, DOGADER, Limak Uludag Electric, The Chamber of Electricity and Urban Planners and the like.
In the Bursa Climate Street Project, it is aimed to contribute to climate change adaptation by reducing carbon dioxide emission rates and saving water and energy.
The second workshop of the "Climate Street Quick Wins Project" was held in the Metropolitan Municipality Council Hall which is an important step in the journey of Bursa's transformation into a sustainable and smart city that consists of 2 phases,. At the meeting attended by all stakeholders of the Project including Cüneyt Taskesen, Head of the Metropolitan Municipality Smart City and Innovation Department, Fatih Inkaya, Smart City Manager, the street where the project will be implemented was determined.
The 28 streets or avenues proposed in the first workshop were analyzed one by one in terms of the applicability of the project. After careful evaluations made, Kukurtlu Street was determined as the area where the quick win projects will be implemented. The project will be implemented in the 900-meter section of Kükürtlü Street, which is similar to examples in Europe with its residential and commercial areas, between Dünya Göz Hospital and Kukurtlu Mosque.
In the workshop, a variety of quick win projects for the Kükürtlü Street, such as carbon emission measurement, solar energy use, smart meters, LED lighting systems, garbage collection / recycling, sustainable mobility and spatial planning has been discussed.
It is planned to start the 2nd Phase studies in March which will contribute to the street residents and the enterprises of the street.
Using the outputs of the project, it is aimed to scale the successful implementations to the entire city, thus supporting the economic and social development of Bursa in the medium and long term.
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktas said, ‘It is very important to combat climate change in order to protect natural resources and carry them to the future. Our Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Climate Change Action Plan is ready in this regard. We participated in BEBKA's Technical Assistance Project on "Capacity Building on Sustainable Energy and Climate Change".
Our investments continue at the point of ensuring the best energy efficiency and tending towards clean energy resources. Our Climate Street Project is also a study in which we aim to raise awareness on this issue. The project, in which the residents of the region will take part is also very important as being the first such example in our country ”.
