June 3, 2019
The second workshop of “CYCLING FOR A BETTER CITY LULEBURGAZ” Project that is funded by Creative Industries Fund of Netherlands was held on 2-3 May, 2019 in Luleburgaz. The workshop was run by the project consortium of Sustainable Solutions from Netherlands, Artgineering from Belgium and Novusens Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute from Turkey as part of the 2nd phase of the project. The workshop was opened by Council General of Netherlands Consulate of Istanbul, Bart Van Bolhuis and Mayor of Luleburgaz, Dr. Murat Gerenli after a courtesy visit to him.
The workshop was attended by municipality representatives, government agencies and institution representatives and experts, bicycle NGOs and volunteers. Roads, intersections, pavements, parking areas, crossings, traffic lights and the like were analyzed with all of the related participants which could potentially help Luleburgaz for future its bicycle infrastructure studies. While studying these bicycle infrastructure samples, an analysis was made with the related participants on developing the cycling culture and social inclusion development such as bicycle trainings, traffic rules trainings, driving courses, making more effective use of the LYMBA, arranging international bicycle festival and effective social media usage. With the discussions and analysis made during the workshop, potential actions that need to be taken further were developed altogether.
The project that was started on October 2018 aims to develop an “Inclusive Bicycle Masterplan” as a design guide handbook. It will consists of the investigation on how to activate the full potential of cycling for the improvement of various aspects of urban development. The project explores cycling as a catalyst for a change towards a more sustainable, healthy, vital, inclusive and democratic urban environment and society.
The project will last 1 year and aims to scale it to all the mid-sized cities across Turkey.
